Councillor Rakhia Ismail
Rakhia Ismail is a politician working for Islington Council since 2012. She is the first female Somali Councillor and first black female as a cabinet member in Islington. Before becoming a Councillor Rakhia was a freelance surface pattern designer working in a number of establishments including workshops, holding talks at the Victoria & Albert Museum, Crafts Council, the October Gallery, Islington Museum and Oxford House. She has held exhibitions in London and Somaliland which include the co-exhibiting Somalia Arts and Crafts at the British Museum.
She is also the founder of ‘Back 2 Basics Create’ an art organisation and Enterprise Charity based in Islington. The organisation aims to integrate and empower women from around the world by promoting cultural traditions linked to arts and crafts.
